Our Pigs

We keep rare breed Gloucester Old Spot, Middle White and Berkshire registered pigs. They are free range and live an extremely happy life rooting around their enclosures.

Gloucester Old Spot

"The Orchard Pig".  Our registered Old Spot sows are from the Princess Joan line, and go by the names of  'Gertrude' and 'Spotty'. The aim is of course to produce not only top quality pork but also to breed really good examples of the breed standard.

Berkshire

Our Berkshire sow's registered name is Ardilaun Royal Sapphire 9, affectionately known as 'Daisy'. Again, the aims are as above.

Middle White

We have during summer 2010 included a lovely rare breed Middle White Sow to our Herd who goes by the name of Mollie.  The breed 'officially' came about back in 1884 and became known as 'the London Porker' but became a minority breed around 1930's during difficult economic times and a lesser quality pork from immature bacon pigs was sought by the housewife, and thus the Middle White rapidly diminished in popularity.

In the 1990's  "quality, not quantity" became the ethos and thus the Middle White began to gain favour once again for its early maturity to quality succulent pork.

Our Sheep

We are very proud of our small flocks of Registered Lleyns, White and Coloured Ryelands.   The Lleyns produce wonderful traditional Welsh Lamb for the freezer and the Ryelands are more to produce show quality young stock.

Our Goats

We specialise in Anglo-Nubian goats which, although less prolific in their milk production than some of the other breeds, produce a higher butterfat milk and which is therefore EXTRA delicious - Well that's our opinion, anyway. The goats are milked twice a day and produce more than enough milk to not only supply the house, but also gets turned into soft and hard cheese as well as yoghurt. Any excess milk goes to the weaner pigs and the whey (having been separated from the curds when cheese making) also goes to the pigs as a special treat.

Ivans Jangalli and Ivans Della are our two registered Does and at the moment whenever a 'buck' is required, we hire one in. This new 'Faithmead' Herd has, in 2009, produced its first offspring and the herd has increased by 3 'kids', one of which is Faithmead Angelica and who may be one of the founder 'girls' for our herd. Her two siblings, Faithmead Blackthorn - is going as a Stud Male to another West Wales Herd and Faithmead Bryony - another female, is to join a well known showing herd near Aberystwyth.

Our Poultry and Waterfowl

We run a fairly wide variety of hens for egg laying and these include: Rhode Island Red X Light Sussex; Light Sussex; Auracana; Cream Leg Bars; Brahma; White Star and Welsummer as well as Poland, Dominique and Pekin Bantams.  From this lot we get "all the colours, in all the sizes"!

We also have Indian Runner, Silver Appleyard and Khaki Campbell ducks. There is also a pair of Geese (George and Gill) who do a fabulous job of watching over the flock and anouncing any suspect 'visitors'.

Our Poultry and Waterfowl are DEFRA registered.
