Pentre Brain - About Us

We are the Kemp’s: Sue, Wilf, Siobhan and Little Noah. We started the ‘good life’ at Pentre Brian in 2002 and have loved it ever since. Mother and Son, Sue and Wilf, moved to this lovely part of mid west Wales from east Kent to get away from the hustle and bustle of town living. Always having an interest in smallholding and growing our own, it was just a matter of taking the plunge and giving it a go. Sue grew up on a fruit farm in mid Kent that was managed by her Father Don. An inspiration for most of the thing we have achieved, Don also designed the orchard at Pentre Brain before he sadly passed away.

We started our foray into smallholding with a small herd of Angora goats as well as some chickens and ducks to keep us in eggs. As the years have gone by we have changed and grown into what we are now.

A local farmer kindly gave us some Silver Apple Yard ducks, these wonderful multi-purpose birds have become a staple on our holding, along with our Light Sussex chickens, and not forgetting our Guinea Fowl, who always let us know when someone is in the yard. A few years ago we started raising Kelly Bronze turkeys for Christmas. There is nothing quite like having a Christmas dinner that you raised yourself.

Since arriving in Wales we have always wanted to keep pigs, and finally we have a small herd of lovely pigs on our land. God knows why it took us so long! They are a joy to keep and keep us entertained every day. We now produce our own bacon, sausages and hams. As well as our pigs, we have a growing flock of Torwen Badger Face sheep. We have been lucky enough to eat some of the nicest lamb since we arrived in Wales, so it seemed the logical next step to produce some of our own.

There have been some trials since living here at Pentre Brain, bitter winters, wet summers; well if we’re honest wet years! But there is not a day that goes by that we are not grateful to be living and working in such an idyllic place. With the help of family and friends we have had some amazing times here. It is exciting to think what the future holds as we grow and expand even more.
